Upgrading Isite for Windows

If you HAVE used the Isite Administrative Console previously, copy your c:\WINNT\isite.ini file into a temporary directory. If your metadata and index are NOT inder the Isite software directory structure, then uninstall and re-install the console and restore the c:\WINNT\isite.ini file. If your metadata or index ARE under the Isite directory, set them aside and restore them after installing the Isite executable.

If you have NOT previously used the Isite Administrative Console (a graphical user interface) before and wish to do so, you will need to do the following before installing the software:

1. Print out your current zserver.ini and sapi.ini files.

2. Run the Isite207i-NT.exe or Isite207-9x.exe executable to install the Isite Administrator under Windows NT/2000 or Windows 95/98 respectively.

3. After installation, click on Start | Programs | Isite | Isite Admin Console and the Windows application will appear.

4. Click on the Zserver Values tab and set the port to the old port listed as "Port=XXX" in your old zserver.ini file.

5. Click on the Database tab and Add a new database based on the location and database name in your old sapi.ini file. Save the database assignments by pressing the Save button on that panel.

6. When your database is selected in the Database tab, a Parse and Index section will appear in the lower part of the Window. To index your metadata, unselect "Use Parsed Dir" and the "Records Found" should indicate how many metadata files found with an xml extension. If it finds no files, change the Iindex file extension under the Options tab to sgml and return to the Database tab. Either XML or SGML is now permitted as an input format for metadata. Once the entries are found, you can press the "Run Iindex" button and they will be indexed in a popup DOS window for you based on the options expressed in the command line below the button there.

7. Once the index has been run, close the notification window and go to the Zserver service tab. Click on the green light button that says "Start Z39.50 Service". In Windows NT/2000 this will start a Windows Service, viewable under the Control Panel | Service icon. If it is started, it will now restart after reboot. Under Windows 95/98 the service will be run in a DOS window. The process will be stopped if you kill this DOS window (95/98 only).

If you move your service to a different computer, or change the database/index name or port number you used, please make changes in the Clearinghouse Registry: http://registry.fgdc.gov/registry so they will be propagated into the search pages.
